NYPC Access SIG Meeting Notice

Meeting Notice

Microsoft World Headquarters
6th floor auditorium
1290 6th Avenue - between 51st and 52nd Streets

        (Note: Bring Picture ID)

Agenda: 6:30 pm Q&A

Speaker: Steve Koop

Topics:

Steve Koop is the Principal Technologist and founder of ConvertU2 in Adelaide, Australia and developer of 2SQL. Steve’s IT career began in 1986 as an analyst programmer. A self taught developer, his focus and passion for the past 7 years has been to develop commercial products which provide automated conversion solutions for Access. His first commercial success was OfficeConverter which converted Access 97 (and earlier) databases to Access 2000 / XP / 2003. OfficeConverter scanned for and repaired obsolete VBA syntax in Access databases that was not compatible with DAO 3.6 (which Microsoft introduced in Office 2000). Files with VBA incompatibility would have compilation and other errors when attempting to convert to Access 2000.

In 2005 Steve founded ConvertU2 and began development of 2SQL, his vision for a tool which would automatically convert Access databases to SQL Server. 2SQL uses the Access Project model which, with the right code changes, allows the user to create a fully SQL compliant front end using SQL connections to the SQL back end. Without an automated solution it’s a very manual and time consuming process to fully convert an ADP this way. Creating a Linked Tables solution is easier, but leaving the Access.mdb using Jet is not a true SQL compliant solution and may not provide the performance the database requires.

In his presentation Steve is going to discuss the methods of converting Access to SQL Server (Linked Tables and ADP), the Microsoft tools (Upsizing Wizard and SSMA – SQL Server Migration Assistant) and the role they play in upsizing Access to SQL, show examples of issues that require conversion, show how 2SQL scans databases for conversion issues, and demonstrate the process a developer would follow to process a database with 2SQL.
