he fact that cloud computing has been one of the fastest growing solutions for big companies is a given. Although some may think that cloud’s main goal is to make data available from anywhere, this is not so much true for companies with big data flow. It essentially helps to reduce workload on the servers, providing faster reading and writing in a sense that all the data that is accessed is deployed on multiple servers specially designed for data maintenance. Of course if the goal is to reduce the workload of data servers, deploying cloud server within private network would not be the best idea. A better solution is to use public clouds provided by IT companies that specialize in this field. But using public cloud servers raises an important issue that has been associated with cloud since its big break, which is security. How can sensitive data be trusted to public cloud server? The solution to this problem is hybrid cloud.

What is hybrid cloud?

Hybrid cloud is a combination of private cloud platform with a public cloud provider. The idea behind this implementation is to put sensitive information on the private cloud, while placing all the other dependant data on to the public cloud.

The communication between two are handled via encrypted channel, thus making sure that all the flowing information is safe. Hybrid also helps to reduce response time. If all of the data was on public network handled by ISP, information flow obviously would be much slower, as it would need to travel longer distances back and forth.

Who needs hybrid cloud?

It is obvious that implementing hybrid cloud into company’s infrastructure is a serious task to do. And as promising and good it looks, not every company needs it. Hybrid cloud is certainly aimed at companies with high workload that might spike up even more at certain times of the year.

For example a retail company’s site workload is consistent throughout the year, but it gets really high during holiday seasons, when everyone starts to order. This is when hybrid cloud is a great implementation, as its resources will be used during holiday seasons, but the company would not need to invest in big private datacenter to work during whole year, as it will not be necessary.

Advantages of hybrid cloud

The main advantages of hybrid cloud are:

Scalability
Security
Reduced IT costs
Reduced workload on datacenters
The biggest advantage of hybrid cloud is its scalability. With hybrid cloud, companies do not need to change network infrastructure to scale up their datacenter, as it is not in their private network. This is very critical because many companies may need to expend their datacenter, but shy away because of changes that might be needed to achieve this, requiring bigger investments and work time.

The other aspect of hybrid’s scalability is that data can be anywhere, which can help to aim at certain parts of the world be it because of laws, security or speed. Other advantage to this technology is as mentioned above, using resources whenever needed. If a company needs to have bigger workload only at certain times of the year, why spend resources on building it privately and using it partially, thus putting unnecessary investments, when you can have help of hybrid cloud whenever needed. And at last security is the core advantage of hybrid cloud. While traditional public cloud is not the optimal solution to put sensitive information on, since hybrid connects private and public together, data gets separated between two, while being able to communicate, which solves issues with security and workload balancing.

Conclusion

All of this advantages and flexibility of hybrid cloud makes it a great choice for the companies with big data. Although being somewhat a new solution, tech companies believe that hybrid is the way to go. TBR’s Software & Cloud Practice analyst Allan Krans’s reports suggest that 24% of companies who look into purchasing cloud, think to go hybrid against 19% for public and 16% for private. The adoption rate of hybrid cloud for North America is 21%, while for Europe it’s 23%. At first the numbers look small, but they are very promising for a relatively new approach to already not an old technology.
